Following a confirmed case of measles, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), in coordination with Public Health Madison & Dane County and Rock County Public Health, is working to identify and directly notify individuals who may have been exposed to the virus.

The investigation has identified public locations where exposure might have occurred, but a complete list of potentially exposed individuals cannot be obtained. People present at these locations during specified dates and times are advised to check their measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination status promptly. Wisconsin residents can access their immunization records through the Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR), with instructions available in English, Spanish, and Hmong. Those unable to access their records should contact their doctor’s office or local health department.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air from person to person. The virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected individual coughs or sneezes. Symptoms may appear seven to 21 days post-exposure.

Individuals exhibiting symptoms of measles are advised to stay home and avoid public places such as work, school, shopping centers, or public transportation. They should call their healthcare provider before visiting to ensure precautions are taken to prevent further exposure.

For assistance finding a doctor or community clinic, individuals can dial 211 for free confidential help. The MMR vaccine is available at area doctors' offices or clinics, local health departments, and some pharmacies. Programs like Vaccines for Children and Vaccines for Adults may assist those without health insurance or whose insurance does not cover vaccines.

Further information about measles can be found on the DHS measles webpage. Updates regarding this investigation will be released as necessary.
