The Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA) has reported a significant increase in new home construction across the state. Data collected from municipalities show that 3,692 new home permits were issued between January 1 and March 31, marking a 36 percent rise compared to the same period last year. This represents approximately 980 more permits than in the first quarter of 2023.
"Wisconsin is showing numbers that are on par with both Midwest and national numbers, which are 36% and 43%, respectively," stated WBA President Jim Doering. He also noted a substantial surge in February alone, with a 50 percent increase in permits issued throughout the state.
Rural counties experienced remarkable growth, with Barron, Florence, Iron, Marinette, Milwaukee, Pierce, Sawyer, and Sheboygan counties all seeing over a 130 percent increase year-over-year in the first quarter. Meanwhile, metropolitan areas recorded the highest number of permits pulled. Notable figures include Brown County with 177 permits; Dane County with 396; Milwaukee County with 275; and Waukesha County with 193.
"Lack of existing inventory continues to fuel the homebuilding industry," commented WBA Executive Director Brad Boycks. "Coupled with a relatively mild winter, we are very pleased with the stable increase in single-family permits compared to quarter one last year."
The Wisconsin Builders Association comprises local associations focused on supporting members who build communities statewide. They advocate for affordable housing accessibility for Wisconsin families and have been committed to protecting what they describe as "the American Dream" for over seven decades.
