FOIA Request Sent to Manitowoc County Election Department Regarding Ballot Counting Methods on October 30, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Manitowoc County Election Department in Wisconsin on October 30, 2024. The request was made by The Sconi, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.

The Sconi requested records under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., specifically seeking information about the methods used by the department to count ballots in upcoming elections. If ballots are counted manually, The Sconi has also asked for an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.

As a media organization, The Sconi stated its role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for The Sconi to fulfill its professional responsibilities, which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given its role in disseminating information, The Sconi believes it is eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.

The Manitowoc County Election Department has yet to respond to this FOIA request.
