Respiratory virus season has commenced in Wisconsin, prompting many residents to seek antibiotics when they fall ill. The correct use of antibiotics can alleviate symptoms and save lives, but unnecessary consumption can lead to harmful side effects and antibiotic resistance. In light of this, Governor Tony Evers declared November 18-24 as Wisconsin Antibiotic Awareness Week. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is highlighting the importance of proper antibiotic use.

"When you are sick, it's tempting to want to try anything to feel better," said State Health Officer and Division of Public Health Administrator Paula Tran. "But it's essential to know that antibiotics do not treat the viral illnesses common this time of year, such as cold, flu, or COVID-19, and taking them can potentially cause side effects."

Antibiotics are effective against bacterial infections when used correctly but do not treat viral infections. A report from 2021 indicated that nearly 33,000 prescriptions in Wisconsin were issued for patients with symptoms related to viral illnesses like cough and bronchitis.

"The overprescription and overuse of antibiotics can lead to germs becoming resistant to the drugs designed to kill them. That is known as antibiotic resistance," explained Dr. Lindsay Taylor, DHS Healthcare-Associated Infections Prevention Program Antimicrobial Stewardship Coordinator. "Antibiotic-resistant infections are harder to treat which can lead to longer illnesses, higher medical costs, and more deaths."

DHS is working with healthcare providers across the state to reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions through education and collaboration with workgroups focused on proper prescribing practices.

Residents are encouraged to take steps toward preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance while preserving the efficacy of these vital medications. More information about safe antibiotic use and respiratory viruses is available on the DHS website.
