On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin and six of his Republican colleagues in the Senate reintroduced the Stopping Overdoses of Fentanyl Analogues (SOFA) Act. The legislation aims to make permanent a regulation that classifies fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I under the Controlled Substance Act. This measure is intended to prevent new fentanyl-related substances from entering communities.
Senator Johnson emphasized the urgency of passing the SOFA Act, stating, "Passing the SOFA Act is more important than ever as Americans face the worst border crisis in our nation’s history. This bill helps law enforcement combat the opioid epidemic by deterring the manufacture of new fentanyl substances." He noted that both families in Wisconsin and communities across America have been severely impacted by the opioid crisis.
The effort to pass this legislation is supported by Senators Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, Mike Crapo and Jim Risch of Idaho, Ted Cruz of Texas, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, and Jim Banks of Indiana.
