U.S. Senator Ron Johnson, representing Wisconsin, has voted in favor of the Laken Riley Act. This legislation is aimed at providing local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with additional tools to address illegal immigrants who commit crimes within the United States.
The Laken Riley Act mandates that ICE must detain or issue a detainer for illegal aliens involved in offenses such as theft, burglary, larceny, shoplifting, any assault against law enforcement officers, or any crime resulting in death or serious bodily injury. Furthermore, the act grants states the authority to seek injunctive relief in federal court if federal agencies fail to enforce existing immigration laws.
Senator Johnson was accompanied by several other senators including Katie Britt from Alabama, Ted Budd from North Carolina, John Thune from South Dakota, J.D. Vance from Ohio, Jim Risch from Idaho among others. The list also includes notable figures like Mitch McConnell from Kentucky and Bernie Moreno from Ohio.
