January marks Human Trafficking Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight the impact of human trafficking in Wisconsin and nationwide. The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Human Trafficking Initiative aims to make the state inhospitable to traffickers while promoting victim-centered strategies and partnerships.
Attorney General Kaul emphasized the importance of awareness, stating, “By recognizing and reporting signs of human trafficking, people can help combat it. We must continue raising awareness regarding this detestable crime.”
In line with this mission, the Wisconsin Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force (WAHTTF) and DOJ are focusing on education, addressing misconceptions, and providing resources for survivors, communities, and law enforcement across Wisconsin.
Several myths about human trafficking were addressed:
- Myth: Human trafficking only happens outside the U.S., particularly in developing countries.
Fact: It occurs in every state, including Wisconsin.
- Myth: Traffickers generally target strangers.
Fact: Victims often know their traffickers who may be romantic partners or family members.
- Myth: Victims come only from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Fact: Anyone can become a victim regardless of background.
- Myth: All human trafficking involves sex.
Fact: Labor trafficking is also prevalent in industries like agriculture and hospitality.
For those suspecting trafficking activities, it is advised not to intervene directly but to document information and contact law enforcement immediately. Immediate assistance is available through 911 or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888. Other resources include the Blue Campaign Tip Hotline at 1-866-347-2423 and NCMEC tipline at 1-800-843-5678.
The DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services offers support through local service providers listed on their website www.BeFreeWisconsin.com or via https://www.wcasa.org/survivors/service-providers/.
A webinar hosted by WAHTTF will take place on February 4, 2025. This event aims to educate attendees about sex and labor trafficking in Wisconsin. Registration details are available at https://wisdoj.eventsair.com/human-trafficking-awareness-webinar/registration.
