FOIA Request to Rock County Election Department Regarding Upcoming Election Candidates on February 5, 2025.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at The Sconi submitted a request under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., for information regarding all candidates running in the upcoming election.
Our request specifically asked for a list of all candidates including their first, middle, and last names. We also requested details about the office they are running for and its jurisdiction along with the party affiliation of each candidate.
In addition to these details, we sought contact information for each candidate which includes their address, phone number, and email address. As members of the media engaged in gathering and reporting news to the public, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities.
These responsibilities include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
We await a response from the Rock County Election Department and will continue our efforts to provide accurate and timely news about local government affairs.
