A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Brown County Election Department in Wisconsin regarding the upcoming spring election candidates on February 5, 2025.
As part of our ongoing commitment to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at The Sconi requested a list of all candidates running for office in the forthcoming election. We asked for this information under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., preferably in an electronic format.
The specifics of our request included the first, middle, and last names of each candidate. We also sought details about the office they are running for and its jurisdiction. Additionally, we asked for information about each candidate's party affiliation.
In addition to these details, we requested all available contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization, access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
