The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has announced the retirement of Bill G. Smith, the Wisconsin State Director. Smith's career with NFIB spans 46 years, beginning as a Government Affairs Representative for North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. He later became NFIB’s first full-time State Director for Wisconsin.

Under his leadership, NFIB emerged as "the leading small business organization in Madison," and Smith was recognized as "one of the most respected lobbyists in the Capitol." His tenure included numerous lobbying successes and roles on various commissions and committees such as President of the Wisconsin Civil Justice Council and Chair of the Coalition for Cost Effective Health Care.

Smith expressed gratitude for his role: “It is important that small business has a respected voice in the development of public policy that impacts their ability to grow and be successful.” He appreciated NFIB for allowing him to be this voice and thanked his colleagues in the lobbying community.

Reflecting on his career, Smith stated he was grateful for relationships built over 46 years with governors, legislators, lobbyists, staff, media, colleagues at NFIB, and especially Wisconsin’s small business owners who supported him throughout his career.

NFIB will now begin searching for a successor to continue Smith's work in Wisconsin.
