The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is currently accepting applications for the Tribal Elder Community Food Box Program. This initiative, funded through Governor Evers' 2023-2025 state budget, aims to provide grants to nonprofit food assistance organizations. The goal is to purchase and distribute food to tribal elders while supporting the growth and operations of food producers and processors from Tribal nations and other Wisconsin-based producers.
The program stipulates that funds must be used to benefit Tribal members across multiple Tribal nations in Wisconsin. Proposals are expected to demonstrate shared decision-making among project partners, ensuring that participating Tribal nations have governance over the distribution of food products within their communities. Collaboration with Tribal nations on food security efforts is a requirement, and the purchased food must be distributed at no cost to Tribal members in Wisconsin. At least 90% of the budget should be allocated for food procurement, with a maximum of 10% available for other eligible expenses related to project implementation or evaluation.
A total of $1.5 million is available for distribution through a competitive review process. These funds aim to enhance current efforts in providing food to Tribal elders and supporting Indigenous-based food production initiatives. There is no minimum request amount, allowing applicants to apply for up to $1.5 million without needing a matching contribution.
Projects selected under this program may begin their contracts and work starting June 2025. For those interested in applying, grant information and application materials can be accessed online.
Questions regarding the application process can be directed to DATCP grants specialist Brian Williams.
