Becky Bean, a registered nurse at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, is preparing to compete in the CopperDog 80 sled dog race. The event, held from February 28 to March 2 in Calumet, Michigan, features several races, including the CopperDog 150 and CopperDog 25. Bean will participate in the CopperDog 80, an eight-dog, two-stage race.
Bean draws parallels between her work as a nurse and her passion for dog mushing. "There are a lot of similarities between nursing and mushing," she said. "Both require you to be quick on your feet, remain calm under pressure, and work as part of a team." She noted that both roles demand adaptability and trust.
Her journey into sled dog racing began years ago and has since become an integral part of her life. Her experience as a nurse has equipped her with patience and focus—skills she applies while navigating challenging conditions during races.
Jenn Jenich-Laplander, Regional Communications & Engagement Coordinator at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, expressed pride in Bean's dual commitments: "We are incredibly proud of Becky and her commitment to both her role as a nurse and as a competitor in the CopperDog 80."
The community also supports the event itself. "We are incredibly proud to support the CopperDog," said Jenich-Laplander. She highlighted how many members of the Aspirus family contribute through volunteering or participating.
