The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is currently investigating an officer-involved death in the Town of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on the evening of February 24, 2025.
On that Monday evening, deputies from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office made contact with a subject known to have a felony warrant. Information from a citizen suggested that this individual might have been carrying a handgun in their waistband. Deputies found the subject on Cherrywood Drive and issued commands which were not followed. A deputy then used a non-lethal weapon. The situation escalated when the subject produced what appeared to be a firearm, prompting another deputy to discharge their firearm at 6:22 p.m., hitting the subject.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene and life-saving measures were attempted by both law enforcement and EMS personnel. Despite these efforts, the subject was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
There were no injuries reported among law enforcement or other civilians during this incident.
In line with agency policy, the deputy involved has been placed on administrative assignment. All officers present during the event were equipped with body cameras.
The investigation is being led by DCI with support from various local agencies including a DCI Crime Response Specialist, Wisconsin State Patrol, Fond du Lac Police Department, and Village of North Fond du Lac Police Department. All officers are cooperating fully with DCI's investigation.
DCI continues to review evidence and will submit their findings to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s office upon completion of their investigation.
Media inquiries should be directed to Wisconsin DOJ.
