The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has announced the conclusion of the frozen road declaration across all state zones, effective from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, February 28. This decision follows a period of warm temperatures that have impacted road conditions.

Currently, Class II and posted road restrictions are paused as field staff assess the situation due to recent rapid warming. Motor carriers are advised to keep updated by checking the Seasonal Weight Restriction Program website or calling the Frozen Roads hotline at (608) 266-8417.

WisDOT collaborates with county highway personnel to evaluate temperature forecasts and utilize frost tubes—devices installed beneath pavement—to determine when roads can safely support heavier loads or when conditions warrant lifting declarations.

Class II roads, covering approximately 1,400 miles of state highways, are particularly vulnerable to damage during spring thaw as frost dissipates. Local governments make decisions regarding weight restrictions on county highways, town roads, city streets, and village streets.

For further details on oversize or overweight permits, visit WisDOT's designated website. Haulers with specific inquiries should contact WisDOT's Oversize/Overweight Permits Unit at (608) 266-7320.
