Ahead of the Wisconsin Spring Election on April 1, 2025, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is reminding citizens about how to obtain identification that is valid for voting. This service is provided free of charge.
Valid identification for voting includes a driver license, identification card, military or student ID card. There is no separate "voter ID." A federally compliant REAL ID card is not necessary for voting. Those unsure if their identification meets requirements should visit the Wisconsin Elections Commission website.
To begin the process online and see a list of required documents needed at a DMV Customer Service Center to obtain voter ID, individuals can visit wisconsindmv.gov/idcards. U.S. citizens can also access a free process to obtain a receipt valid for voting if an ID card isn't available in time.
For questions about obtaining an ID for voting, call DMV’s toll-free hotline at (844) 588-1069. Questions regarding voter eligibility, poll locations, voter registration information or other election-related inquiries should be directed to the Wisconsin Elections Commission at elections.wi.gov.
Applications can be started now at wisconsindmv.gov or at local DMV Customer Service Centers. To find a DMV location and check hours, services and wait times, visit wisconsindmv.gov/centers.
