Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital in Wisconsin has been honored by the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) with a Quality and Patient Safety Award for 2025. The award acknowledges hospitals that have implemented innovative strategies to enhance quality, patient safety, and outcomes.
The hospital received recognition for its "Improving Mortality Index" project. This initiative measures death rates within a population, which can lead to improvements in healthcare infrastructure, emergency response systems, and disease control measures. Aspirus Stevens Point was acknowledged in the General Medical Surgical Hospital category for facilities with 26-99 beds and was among four hospitals awarded this year.
"This project was identified to help us meet one of our strategic system performance pillars," stated Amanda Walloch, Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital. "As an added bonus it also helped us improve our system-wide hospice referral process."
Recipients of the WHA Quality and Patient Safety Award were chosen by a council of healthcare quality experts who assessed their innovative quality stories and top performance scores.
"We are grateful to be recognized with this honor," said Beth Sekerka, Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital. "We learned that improving our mortality index requires a multi-faceted team that achieved success by setting goals and having clear guiding principles that were frequently reviewed and supported by the clinical and leadership teams on many levels."
Aspirus Health is a nonprofit health system based in Wausau, Wisconsin, serving areas including northeastern Minnesota, northern and central Wisconsin, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The organization operates 18 hospitals and 130 outpatient locations with nearly 14,000 staff members.
