The Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is urging citizens to ensure they have the necessary identification for the upcoming Spring Election on April 1, 2025.
"Most people already have some form of identification they can use for voting purposes, including a driver license or ID," said DMV Administrator Tommy Winkler.
While a federally compliant REAL ID card is not required at the polls, other forms such as military or student ID cards are acceptable according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Voters can verify if their identification meets requirements by visiting the commission's website.
To obtain an ID card for voting, individuals can start online to view a list of required documents needed at a DMV Customer Service Center. A process is available for U.S. citizens to receive a free receipt valid for voting if an ID card cannot be issued in time.
The DMV provides this service and issues ID cards for voting purposes at no cost. For assistance, individuals can contact the DMV’s toll-free hotline at (844) 588-1069.
Additionally, the DMV website offers tools to locate nearby centers and check wait times.
