Glenn Grothman, who represents Wisconsin’s 6th District, said that Project GRILL empowers students by helping them build practical skills through hands-on collaboration with industry professionals. The statement was made on X.
"Project GRILL challenges high school students to design and build a working grill," said Grothman, Representative. "Developing real-world skills in engineering, manufacturing, and teamwork. It was inspiring to see the presentations at Winnebago Lutheran Academy. Witness firsthand the impact of this powerful industry-student collaboration."
Project G.R.I.L.L. (Growing Readiness in Learning and Leading) is a Wisconsin initiative that connects high school students with local manufacturers to design and build charcoal grills, promoting hands-on technical education. According to Envision Greater Fond du Lac, the program began in Sheboygan County and has expanded since 2008 to include career exploration through factory tours and technical college visits. It emphasizes workforce readiness by guiding students through every stage of product development, from concept to completion.
In 2023, Project G.R.I.L.L. included 77 students from seven high schools who collaborated with local businesses to build custom grills, gaining practical experience in welding, metalwork, and teamwork. FOX 11 News reported that about 65% of participants expressed interest in manufacturing careers after graduation, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness in building technical skills and career readiness among students.
Wisconsin’s Fast Forward program allocated $1 million in 2025 to expand technical education in high schools, supporting student training in fields like manufacturing and construction. As reported by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development, the grants aim to enhance workforce readiness and fill critical industry skill gaps. These funds enable schools to better align curricula with local economic needs, boosting students' post-graduation career opportunities.
Representative Grothman has served Wisconsin’s 6th Congressional District since 2015 and sits on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. According to his official House biography, Grothman has consistently supported expanding technical education and industry-aligned training programs. His legislative priorities reflect a focus on workforce development and strengthening the manufacturing sector through education.
