The Vermont Department of Labor has introduced two grant programs intended to support workforce development across the state. These initiatives, titled the EmployVT: Youth Career Connector and the Workforce Expansion Program, aim to engage young Vermonters and broaden employment opportunities for job seekers. This announcement underscores the Department's dedication to linking individuals seeking employment with promising job prospects available within Vermont.
“These initiatives reflect our priority to strengthen Vermont’s workforce by supporting programs that connect youth to career pathways and help employers create accessible, sustainable job opportunities,” stated Michael Harrington, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Labor. He urged organizations, educators, and employers to consider these opportunities and participate in fostering Vermont’s upcoming workforce.
The EmployVT: Youth Career Connector targets organizations that work with out-of-school youth aged 16 to 24 who encounter employment barriers such as limited work experience or low income. Previously known as the Summer Youth Employment Program, it offers paid work experiences, job readiness training, and additional support services to assist participants in developing essential skills and confidence for workplace success. Applications for this program are due by May 9, 2025, with a maximum grant award of $75,000 provided to approximately ten partnerships. Funding is sourced from the U.S. Department of Labor under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.
The Workforce Expansion Program is a two-year pilot initiative aimed at aiding individuals in securing employment and helping employers fill vacancies. Working in collaboration with regional economic and workforce development organizations, the Department will assist in the formation of local workforce strategies, promote training, and facilitate job connections. Recipients will have access to a dedicated Workforce Expansion Specialist assigned to their community for up to two years. This specialist will coordinate partnerships, support strategic planning, and connect local resources. Applications for this program will close on May 12, 2025.
Both programs are open for applications. Further details and application forms can be found at the Vermont Department of Labor's website.
