Tom Tiffany, a representative from Wisconsin, has expressed concerns about the burden on American consumers due to global drug pricing systems. He praised former President Donald Trump's reforms in a statement made on X.
"Americans shouldn't have to pay the highest drug prices in the world just to subsidize discounts for foreign countries," said Tiffany, U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. "President Trump is putting Americans FIRST by ending the unfair global scam in prescription drug pricing."
In May 2025, Trump signed an executive order reinstating the "Most Favored Nation" policy aimed at reducing U.S. prescription drug prices by aligning them with the lowest prices paid in other developed countries. According to the Financial Times, this order instructs the Department of Health and Human Services to negotiate or enforce compliant pricing to address a long-standing cost disparity. While consumer advocates have shown support for this measure, pharmaceutical companies warn it could impede drug innovation and limit access.
A 2024 study by RAND Corporation found that U.S. prescription drug prices are, on average, 2.78 times higher than those in 33 other developed countries. The disparity is even more pronounced for brand-name drugs, with U.S. prices averaging 4.22 times more than international counterparts. This financial burden on American patients has intensified calls for systemic reform to tackle excessive pharmaceutical costs.
The United States' approach to drug pricing differs significantly from other nations, historically relying on market forces rather than centralized negotiations. As reported by the Commonwealth Fund, most developed countries employ government-led systems to negotiate or regulate drug prices, resulting in substantially lower costs. The lack of similar controls in the U.S. has contributed to consistently rising pharmaceutical expenditures over recent decades.
Tiffany, a Republican representing Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district since winning a special election in 2020, previously served in both the Wisconsin State Assembly and State Senate. According to Wikipedia, he is known for advocating limited government and free-market solutions in healthcare.
