Wisconsin's Joint Finance Committee (JFC), led by Republicans, has started voting on significant components of the upcoming state budget. This process occurs amidst ongoing discussions between Democratic Governor Tony Evers and GOP leaders.
The committee has approved funding for a youth firefighter training program and staffing for the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Specifically, JFC decided to extend five temporary call center positions at the department for an additional three years. These staff members play a crucial role in assisting small businesses by helping credential and license holders across Wisconsin.
This budget cycle might witness more compromise than previous ones due to the ongoing negotiations between the governor and legislative leaders. Key issues such as tax cuts and education funding are central to these talks and are expected to account for a significant portion of the state's surplus revenue.
Nevertheless, insiders suggest that much of this surplus will be directed towards addressing the rising costs of Medical Assistance programs like Medicaid.
The JFC will continue its budgetary work throughout June. Further updates will follow as developments occur.
