June marks a significant time for Wisconsin, celebrated as June Dairy Month. This period highlights the state's rich dairy history and acknowledges the contributions of dairy farmers, haulers, processors, distributors, and consumers in maintaining a robust industry. Secretary Randy Romanski of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) emphasizes this in his recent commentary.
Romanski underscores the importance of each link in the dairy chain during June Dairy Month. The DATCP Dairy Processor Grant program plays a crucial role by fostering innovation and sustaining Wisconsin's dairy processing facilities' viability. In 2024, increased investments from Governor Tony Evers and the legislature allowed additional grants to be awarded, with millions invested over time. These grants support various aspects such as food safety development, staff training, plant expansion or modernization, and professional consulting services.
Governor Evers continues to prioritize agriculture in his 2025-27 Executive Budget. This includes funding for the Dairy Innovation Hub to enhance research and innovation within the sector. Additionally, $1.5 million is proposed for a new pilot program named Dairy Agriculture Resilience Investment Now Grant (DARING), aimed at supporting on-farm projects that boost resilience and efficiency.
June Dairy Month also provides an opportunity to reflect on Wisconsin's dairy industry's overall health. The DATCP has collaborated with local stakeholders to strengthen surveillance against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI/H5N1). Since March 2024, more than 7,000 milk samples have been tested under this initiative.
As pasteurization ensures safe dairy products statewide, citizens are encouraged to support local farms housing approximately 1.28 million cows across Wisconsin. Reflecting on past achievements amid ongoing challenges highlights the strength and adaptability of Wisconsin's dairy industry.
Secretary Romanski encourages residents to celebrate June Dairy Month by enjoying locally produced milk or ice cream as part of appreciating Wisconsin's rich heritage.
