FOIA Request to University of Wisconsin-Madison regarding recent course syllabi on August 6, 2025.

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted by The Sconi, a media organization focused on providing comprehensive news coverage on local governmental affairs. The request was sent to the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., seeking access to public records related to academic courses.

The request specifically asks for a complete list of course syllabi for all undergraduate and graduate courses offered during the Spring 2025 semester. This includes syllabi from all departments, schools, and colleges within the university, regardless of whether the courses were conducted in-person, online, or through hybrid formats.

Additionally, The Sconi has requested relevant metadata associated with these syllabi. This includes details such as the course title and number, instructor name, department or academic unit, and the format in which each course was delivered (online/in-person/hybrid).

The request highlights the role of media professionals in holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. It also mentions that as a member of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization assisting media companies in investigating governmental agencies—The Sconi is eligible for a fee waiver.

We look forward to receiving this information in an electronic format as it will greatly aid in our reporting efforts. As always, we remain open for any questions or clarifications regarding this request.
