The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) in White River Junction, Vermont, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Established in 2005 by Michelle Ollie and James Sturm, CCS has become known nationally for its focus on cartooning and graphic storytelling.
Since its founding, the school has developed a reputation for producing graduates who have published award-winning comics and taken on roles as educators and leaders in creative industries worldwide. The institution has also contributed to the revitalization of White River Junction by converting former commercial spaces into centers for art and public engagement.
“We live in challenging times and I’m grateful to be surrounded by so many creative and inspiring people,” said CCS cofounder Michelle Ollie. “Whatever the future brings, CCS will remain steadfast in its commitment to education, humanities, and the arts.”
James Sturm, also a cofounder of CCS, stated: “Cartoonists are my people and I’m proud of the community that the school has helped nurture. I think it’s a minor miracle CCS exists and continues to thrive.”
The school's approach remains independent and adaptable, allowing it to meet changing needs within both student populations and broader communities. Its Applied Cartooning Lab continues to focus on education, advocacy, and connecting people through the humanities.
To mark two decades since its inception, CCS plans to hold special events, talks, publications, and workshops throughout the academic year.
