Republican state Rep. Jim Steineke wants to see more accountability in local government.
Steineke recently tweeted his support for AB-564, a measure that would require Gov. Tony Evers to lay out how he is spending the state’s COVID relief funds as well as steers $100 million Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) and American Rescue Act funds towards students’ mental health.
“Mental health services for our kids is more important today than ever,” Steineke posted. "Winning the support of many groups, and the opposition from none, I personally can’t wait to vote for this bill from Rep. (Jon ) Plumer that invests $100 million in the important endeavor.”
AB-564 would also require that reports be tabulated outlining how those funds are spent. The bill has already passed the Assembly Mental Health Committee.
According to the Wisconsin Examiner, in the past Evers has quickly moved to veto similar legislation.
“The public should know how billions in their dollars are being spent,” Plumer (R-Lodi) said at a recent Assembly Mental Health Committee public hearing earlier this month.
A spokesperson from the governor’s office argues he “has repeatedly proposed increased investments in mental health support for students, many of which were cut by Republicans in the Legislature.”
Democrats were also quick to point to state laws they insist grant the governor full control over most federal funds the state receives.
