High school juniors in Wisconsin are now invited to apply for the upcoming Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council. The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is accepting applications until March 31, 2025.
Governor Evers emphasized the importance of agriculture in the state, stating, "Farmers and agriculture have been the backbone of our state for generations. We must continue to bolster this industry so that it remains a central part of our state's future, and that means preparing new generations of farmers, producers, and agricultural leaders." He encouraged students to join the council as 2025 is designated as the Year of the Kid in Wisconsin.
The council meets virtually each month during the school year, offering presentations, discussions, and connections with professionals in agriculture. Students who will be seniors in the 2025-2026 school year are encouraged to apply.
DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski expressed pride in the council's continuation into its sixth year. “The council is a great opportunity for young people who are enthusiastic about agriculture to connect with DATCP staff and industry leaders," he said.
The council aims to have 15 members, including at least one from each of nine districts. Remaining seats will be filled by at-large members. A map detailing district counties is available online.
Makayla Staudinger from De Pere shared her positive experience: “Being part of the Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council has allowed me to expand my knowledge and interest in agricultural policy." She recommended interested seniors apply.
Council goals include highlighting agricultural careers, sharing farmer resources, providing policy insight, and enhancing networking opportunities. Members serve a one-year term.
Romanski praised past members: “The former and current council members are outstanding representatives of the agricultural industry."
In 2025, an electronic application process was introduced. Applicants must submit a brief essay and a one-minute video detailing their involvement in agriculture and future plans.
Jordan Berg from Neillsville concluded with praise for the program: “The Wisconsin Agriculture Youth Council has been an amazing way to learn more about Wisconsin agriculture, DATCP, and myself."
Upon completing their term, council members receive a certificate. For application details and further information, visit DATCP's website.
