Has Aaron Rodgers played his last game for the Green Bay Packers?
A disappointed Rodgers walked off the field after the San Francisco 49ers escaped with a 13-10 victory over the favored Packers to advance to the NFC Championship against the Los Angeles Rams.
Rodgers, 38, is left to contemplate whether he’ll return to Green Bay for what would be his 18th season in the National Football League and 15th as the Packers starting quarterback. The three-time Most Valuable Player (so far) grumbled with the organization through most of last season before putting together another MVP-caliber season in 2021. The Packers went 13-4 and earned the top seed in the NFC before losing to the Rams, leaving him with just one Super Bowl title for Titletown.
Rodgers could retire or try to force a trade and find a team closer to a Super Bowl run than one that has to rebuild. The cap-strapped Packers are an estimated $40 million over the cap and could lose other key veterans. Among the free agents is Rodgers’ favorite WR Davante Adams.
"I think this thing is definitely going to look different moving forward," Rodgers said after the game on NFL.com. "Green Bay has a lot of decisions, a lot of guys with opportunities. So it will be interesting to see what things look like moving forward."
He added he doesn’t want to be part of a rebuilding team, which the Packers just might be.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur said the team is "hopeful” Rodgers is the Green Bay quarterback next year. But stopped short of openly campaigning for his return.
“We would love for him to be a Packer and a Packer until the day he decides to retire,” LaFleur said in an interview posted on NFL.com.
Economics will dictate where he goes. A team looking to acquire Rodgers in trade would have to be playoff-ready and willing to give up multiple draft picks. They’ll also have to absorb Rodgers' cap hit of $19.8 million, something many teams are not prepared to do.
Three potentially landed spots, according to NFL insiders, are the Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. We might add the Indianapolis Colts to the list.
