With tensions flaring in the region, some Wisconsin National Guard troops are present in Eastern Europe. Even though none of them were deployed to aid in the developing war between Russia and Ukraine, 150 will stay in Eastern Europe.

When they first departed for Europe nearly a year ago, it was indicated they would be stationed in places such as Poland, Lithuania and Romania, in addition to some other NATO countries, WEAU 13 News reported.

“I’m so proud to lead such a great group of soldiers who have worked so hard to get us here and are putting home life responsibilities on hold to serve their country and build partnerships with our NATO allies," Capt. Shawn Smith, the commander of the Wisconsin National Guard 107th Maintenance Company, said, according to WEAU 13 News.

The soldiers are anticipated to return to Wisconsin during the spring with the situation in the region continuing to escalate. These units first came to the region last May, according to a report from WEAU 13 News. A farewell ceremony was held for the soldiers where Smith made his remarks above.

The typical deployment lasts for a year, meaning that a deployment this spring would be slightly ahead of schedule, according to a report from WEAU 13 News. In related news, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda declared a state of emergency in his country.
