Packers rookie receiver Doubs ‘blowing up’ coach’s phone in eagerness to learn

The Green Bay Packers’ rookie receiver trio of Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure have shown that they are “eager to learn” as they’ve starting training with the team.

The trio’s lack of experience has raised concerns, given quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ tendency to be rough on rookie receivers, but coaches and mentors are optimistic about the athletes’ abilities and work ethics, ESPN reports.

Doubs in particular has show his eagerness to perform. While a lot of the draft attention has been on Watson, the highest draft pick for the Packers in 20 years, Doubs has been proving himself.

“Packers WRs coach Jason Vrable said Romeo Doubs was blowing up his phone at 11 p.m. recently asking about plays. Joked his wife is gonna ask him who he’s talking to late at night like Jake from State Farm’s wife in that commercial,” Matt Schneidman, Green Bay Packers beat writer for The Athletic, posted on Twitter.

Doubs and Toure were offseason training partners before being drafted and were thrilled to get the chance to play on a team together, something they never thought would happen, ESPN said. Toure faces more hurdles in keeping his spot on the roster as he was the last pick for the Packers and doesn’t have as much playtime as other rookies because of the COVID-19 pandemic impacting some of his college seasons.

Doubs also faced some slim seasons during the height of the coronavirus, and coaches said he’s a little raw and unpolished. But the Packers like his size and his ability to catch deep balls, something he was known for in his college career, ESPN said. It’s hoped he can fill the hole left by Marquez Valdez-Scantling, next to Amari Rodgers, who no longer has to fill in such large holes in the receiver lines.
