Wisconsin taxpayers are facing a deluge of school referendum requests as 85 school districts in the state seek tax hikes. Among them, Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) stands out with the largest request. The districts are collectively seeking billions of dollars in increased revenue or borrowing.
MPS is leading the charge by asking for an eventual, permanent increase to its revenue limit of $252 million annually. This request is part of a larger trend where districts are seeking permission from voters for various financial needs, such as borrowing money for capital projects or maintenance, temporary revenue limit increases, or permanent revenue limit increases that would result in higher taxes year after year.
In light of MPS's proposal, the Badger Institute has conducted research on the district's track record in various areas and has recommended a "no" vote on the referendum.
The referendum requests span across districts of all sizes in different parts of Wisconsin, with some districts like Drummond, Richland, Hamilton, River Valley, Lake Country, Port Edwards, and North Lakeland presenting multiple referendums on the ballot.
The influx of referendum requests highlights the financial challenges faced by school districts in the state and the impact these decisions will have on Wisconsin taxpayers.
