Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce's Kurt Bauer recently interviewed Congressman Bryan Steil to discuss policy issues affecting Wisconsin employers and families. The video of the interview was released on Tuesday. During the conversation, Bauer, who is WMC’s President & CEO, highlighted that Rep. Steil’s district is a significant focus in this election cycle.
The discussion touched on inflation, which has been identified as the top concern for businesses according to the latest Wisconsin Employer Survey. "Inflation has moved prices up over the past four years by about 20%. Families are getting clobbered," said Steil during the interview. He suggested addressing energy policy, reducing regulatory burdens, and curbing reckless spending in Washington as ways to tackle inflation.
Steil also spoke about tax reform as a means to reduce costs and stimulate economic growth. He mentioned that accelerated depreciation and favorable tax treatments for R&D investments enable businesses to reinvest, create jobs, and increase wages. By leveraging the tax code, American workers could earn more and further contribute to economic growth.
Bauer noted that many manufacturers in Wisconsin face unnecessary regulatory compliance costs. He cited a National Association of Manufacturers study indicating that regulation costs $3 trillion annually. "Regulation is suffocating – it’s stifling the American economy," Bauer stated.
High energy costs are another challenge for Wisconsin businesses. "We need an 'all-of-the-above' energy approach to address our energy needs here in the state of Wisconsin," Steil remarked. He emphasized that market forces rather than federal regulations should guide energy solutions.
