Officer-involved death in Fitchburg investigated by Wisconsin DOJ

The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has completed an investigation into an officer-involved death in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on the morning of August 12, 2024.

Fitchburg police officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Whispering Pines Way around 8:00 a.m. Upon arrival, officers were informed by a witness about a physical altercation between two individuals and were directed to the location. Officers attempted to make contact by knocking on the door for an extended period before entering the premises.

Inside, they found Kevin D. Price armed with a knife. Fitchburg Police Sergeant Peter Johnston, who has 14 years of law enforcement experience, discharged his weapon, hitting Price. Officers immediately began lifesaving efforts and Price was transported to a local hospital where he died on August 15, 2024.

All involved law enforcement personnel were equipped with body cameras during the incident. Following standard procedures, Sergeant Johnston is currently on administrative assignment.

The investigation was led by DCI with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, Dane County Sheriff’s Office, DCI’s Digital Evidence Unit, and a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All involved law enforcement personnel cooperated fully with the investigation.
