A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Washington County Election Department in Wisconsin on October 30, 2024. The request, made by media organization The Sconi, seeks detailed information about the methods used by the department to count ballots in upcoming elections.
In our quest for transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, we at The Sconi have asked for a comprehensive list of methods being employed for ballot counting. If any ballots are being counted manually, we have also requested an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.
As a news organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. This includes holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., which governs access to government records.
We eagerly await a response from the Washington County Election Department and will continue our efforts to ensure transparency and accountability in local government operations.
