A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Door County Election Department in Wisconsin on October 30, 2024. The request was made by The Sconi, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The Sconi requested information about the methods being used by the Door County Election Department to count ballots in the upcoming election. If manual counting is being employed, The Sconi also asked for an estimated number of people who will be working on election night.
The request was made under the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq., with a preference for receiving the records in electronic format. As a media organization, The Sconi stressed that access to public records is essential for its professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
In line with this commitment to transparency and accountability, The Sconi has asked for a fee waiver as a media professional, citing their role in disseminating information to the public. They have offered to answer any questions regarding their request and are awaiting a response from the Door County Election Department.
