A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the La Crosse County Election Department on October 30, 2024. The request, made by The Sconi, a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, sought information about the methods used by the department to count ballots.
The Sconi specifically requested a list of methods used for ballot counting. If manual counting is employed, the organization also asked for an estimated number of people who would be working on election night.
As a media organization, The Sconi emphasized its role in gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for fulfilling their professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. In light of this role in disseminating information, The Sconi stated its belief that it qualifies for a fee waiver as a media professional.
The FOIA request represents an ongoing effort by The Sconi and other media organizations to ensure transparency and accountability in our electoral processes.
