A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Wood County Election Department in Wisconsin on October 30, 2024. The request, filed by media organization The Sconi, sought detailed information about the methods used for counting ballots in the upcoming elections.
In a bid to ensure transparency and accountability during the electoral process, The Sconi requested specific details about whether the ballot counting would be done manually or using an automated system. If manual counting is to be employed, the media organization asked for an estimated number of people who would be working on election night.
The Sconi emphasized its role as a news organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. Access to such public records, it argued, is essential for fulfilling its professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.
As part of its request, The Sconi also asked for a fee waiver as a media professional engaged in gathering and reporting news to the public. This move is seen as part of a broader effort by media organizations across the country to enhance transparency and accountability during elections.
