Officer-involved death under investigation in Madison

The Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is examining an officer-involved death that took place in Madison, Wisconsin. The incident occurred on the evening of December 30, 2024.

Madison Police Department officers responded to a vehicle theft report at the Best Western on Annamark Drive around 8:22 p.m. Following a foot chase, they apprehended an adult male suspect and called for emergency medical services (EMS). After EMS evaluated the suspect at the scene, law enforcement transported him to Dane County Jail. Upon arrival, he was found unresponsive and subsequently taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he died on December 31, 2024. No weapons were discharged during this event.

As per agency policy, involved officers have been placed on administrative leave. DCI is spearheading the investigation with support from a DCI Crime Response Specialist. All law enforcement agencies involved are cooperating fully with DCI's investigation.

DCI continues to review evidence and establish the facts surrounding this incident. Once concluded, investigative reports will be submitted to the Dane County District Attorney’s office.
