Yesterday, three Republican lawmakers sent letters to major cellular carriers and the FBI, questioning the handling of cellular data in the investigation of pipe bombs found on January 6, 2021. Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Representative Barry Loudermilk reached out to AT&T Inc., T-Mobile USA, Inc., Verizon Communications Inc., and the FBI.

The inquiry stems from claims by a former FBI official that some cellular data used in the investigation was corrupted. This alleged corruption may have hindered efforts to identify those responsible for planting the pipe bombs.

Contradicting this claim, a report from January 2, 2025, by a House Subcommittee indicates that cellular carriers did not provide corrupted data nor were they informed of any issues by the FBI.

The letters demand that the carriers and the FBI submit all analyzed data for review by Senate and House committees. They also seek communications between the FBI and carriers concerning requests and analysis of this data.

Further details about these oversight letters can be found in the New York Post.
