A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Wisconsin Elections Commission regarding candidates running in the upcoming spring elections. The request was sent on February 5, 2025.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at The Sconi are requesting detailed information about all candidates participating in the forthcoming elections. This request is made under the provisions of the Wisconsin Open Records Law, §19.31 et seq.
Specifically, we are seeking an electronic format list of all candidates that includes their first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation.
In addition to this, we have also requested contact information for each candidate including their address, phone number, and email address.
As members of the media, our role involves gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.
