The Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) has announced charges against Heather Robinson, a 43-year-old resident of Laona, Wisconsin. Robinson faces one count of theft in a business setting, involving amounts between $10,000 and $100,000. The charge also pertains to crimes against an elder or disabled person. She is accused of stealing over $95,000 from her elderly father.
The criminal complaint reveals that Robinson was appointed as the guardian for her father, who resides in a long-term care facility for the elderly in Forest County. As his guardian, she was responsible for paying his rent at the facility using funds from his account. However, payments became overdue when she attempted to use checks drawn on her father's account that lacked sufficient funds. The investigation found that between September 20th, 2023, and October 8th, 2024, Robinson allegedly misappropriated $95,446.02 from her father's bank account. Of this amount, $67,102.15 was reportedly spent on online gambling.
Attorney General Josh Kaul commented on the case stating: "The Wisconsin Department of Justice is proud to work to protect seniors from financial harm." He also expressed gratitude towards those involved in investigating and prosecuting the case.
Robinson remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in court proceedings. The Vilas County District Attorney will handle the prosecution following an investigation by DCI.
An initial court appearance is set for April 15, 2025.
