Mega Millions is set to undergo significant changes starting April 5, 2025. The cost per play will increase from $2 to $5, introducing several enhancements aimed at improving the player experience.
Key changes include a built-in Multiplier feature at no extra cost. Each $5 play will automatically receive a randomly generated Multiplier (ranging from 2X to 10X) printed on the ticket. This ensures that players can win prizes starting from $10, as the lowest possible Multiplier is 2X.
The starting jackpot will rise to $50 million, with expectations of faster-growing jackpots reaching up to or beyond $1 billion. Non-jackpot prizes will now range from $10 to $10 million.
Players can select five numbers out of 70 and one Mega Ball number out of 24 or opt for a "Quick Pick." Drawings will continue on Tuesday and Friday evenings.
"Players are going to love the new Mega Millions," stated Wisconsin Lottery Director Cindy Polzin. "Adding in the Multiplier and offering bigger prizes should lead to some big wins, hopefully in Wisconsin."
The new Multiplier replaces the previous Megaplier add-on feature and applies only to non-jackpot prizes. Match-5 prizes can range from $2 million with a 2X Multiplier up to $10 million with a 10X Multiplier.
The final drawing for the current version of Mega Millions is scheduled for April 4, 2025, with sales for the updated game beginning on April 5. The first drawing under the new format will occur on April 8 at 10:00 p.m.
From March 11, players in Wisconsin could not purchase advance draws beyond April 4 but will be able to buy up to eight advance draws starting April 5.
If not won by April 4, the estimated jackpot at transition time will carry over into the new format; otherwise, it resets to a starting amount of $50 million. The odds of winning have improved slightly in this revamped version.
