The American quilting tradition continues to thrive in Vermont, as evidenced by the A Vermont Quilt Sampler exhibition currently on display at Billings Farm & Museum. This exhibition showcases a wide range of quilts from both novice and experienced quilters, highlighting various styles and techniques.
Sherlock Terry, Curatorial and Exhibits Manager at Billings Farm & Museum, emphasized the diverse narratives presented through the quilts. “We’re excited to present a true sampler, one that tells stories ranging from funny to heartfelt and even tragic,” he stated. He also noted the innovative blending of fiber arts with traditional methods by today's quilters.
The opening reception recognized several outstanding works in different categories. Pam Weeks, Curator at the New England Quilt Museum, served as the quilt judge for this event.
Kate Salesin from West Lebanon, NH received the Best Hand Quilting award for her "Sprinkle Quilt." Salesin described her work saying she “hand quilted with sock yarn and let the bold sprinkles of colors play over the top.”
Jane Rippe of Enfield, NH was awarded Best Machine Quilting for her "Jewel Quilt," which features intricate details and reversible design. Rippe commented on the effort involved: “There was a tremendous amount of measuring, marking, and stitching to create a completely reversible quilt.”
Linda Diak from Chester, VT won Best Original Design with "Oh, Canada," inspired by Neil Young’s lyrics. Diak expressed her sentiments regarding its creation: “By the time I put this piece on the longarm, Canada—our neighbor, our friend—was under senseless attack by our government.”
Three quilts were chosen for Judge’s Choice awards. KZ Stevens from Bennington created "Putting Back the Pieces," reflecting personal healing through quilting. Norma Ippolito of Chester crafted "Trinkets," celebrating 50 years of collecting miniature treasures. Janet Block from Rutland designed "Dahlia 1," drawing inspiration from gardening.
A Vermont Quilt Sampler is open daily until September 1st at Billings Farm & Museum. The exhibition includes 54 quilts by artists across 36 towns in Vermont and features interpretive panels and hands-on activities related to quilting techniques.
Visitors can participate in voting for their favorite quilt for a People’s Choice Award during select weekends when local quilting guilds will also demonstrate techniques.
