Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), and 16 other members of Congress have sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel. The letter requests information about the Biden administration’s collection of call logs from sitting Members of Congress.
The request follows an October 6, 2025 briefing in which FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino informed several senators that, during Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation known as Arctic Frost, the FBI collected and analyzed call logs from at least nine Members of Congress between January 4 and January 7, 2021. The document provided at the briefing listed elected officials who were targeted in the investigation.
“The Biden administration’s blatant weaponization of the federal government should shock every American,” the Members wrote.
The letter asks the Department of Justice and FBI to provide all records related to the collection and analysis of these call logs. It also requests communications between DOJ or FBI personnel and the Biden White House. If any materials are protected by grand jury secrecy rules, specifically Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6(e), the Members asked DOJ to seek judicial authorization for their release.
“Given that these materials relate to an unprecedented collection of records and information on sitting MOCs and raise serious constitutional concerns, Congress’ need for these records clearly outweighs any interest in secrecy,” the Members noted.
This action is part of ongoing efforts by Chairmen Johnson and Grassley to investigate alleged abuses connected to Arctic Frost, which reportedly targeted 92 Republican organizations and individuals.
All Members of Congress known to have been targeted as part of Arctic Frost signed the letter, along with all Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Signatories include Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.) and Ashley Moody (R-Fla.).
Ron Johnson has previously won three U.S. Senate elections: defeating Russ Feingold in both 2010 and 2016, and Mandela Barnes in 2022.
