Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway is singing the praises of the Wisconsin Supreme Court over what she views as its decision to put the people of Dane County first in the fight against COVID-19.

“Public Health Madison Dane County @publichealthMDC followed the emerging science, implemented best practices, and used their authority prudently and effectively,” Rhodes-Conway tweeted. “As a result, Dane County had one of the lowest death rates in the state.”

A recent decision by the state high court paved the way for organizations to make COVID regulations in private businesses. The ruling came after Dane County was sued by a pair of business protesting the ability of Public Health Madison & Dane County to limit gatherings in private businesses. As part of its decision, justices backed Dane County, including their authority over such decisions without approval or signature from elected officials and the ordinance in place that can fine violators of such polices.

County Executive Joe Parisi joined Rhodes-Conway in supporting the direction of things, including recently taking to Twitter to extol Public Health’s decision-making over the past 24-months as the main reason Dane County had one of the lowest per capita death rates in the country.

While other businesses are also praising the decision and expressing gratitude for the guidance, WKOW.com reports not everyone stands in support.

Gymfinity, one of the businesses who originally sued Dane County, recently released a statement indicating they hoped this decision would remind ruling bodies to consider all businesses, big and small, in any decisions they make.
