U.S. Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin, along with Senators Katie Britt, Tommy Tuberville, Bill Hagerty, and 68 other Republican colleagues, has raised concerns regarding the Department of Justice's handling of noncitizen voter registration in federal elections. In a letter addressed to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, the lawmakers criticized the DOJ for not preventing noncitizens from registering to vote and for its refusal to prosecute those who have registered.
The senators expressed their worry about reports indicating that noncitizens are participating in federal elections by registering and voting. They pointed out that as of now, there has been no response from the DOJ regarding their inquiry sent on July 12, 2024. This inquiry sought information on the department's efforts to enforce laws prohibiting noncitizen voting.
"We are deeply concerned by reports of non-citizens registering to vote and voting in federal elections," they stated. The lawmakers also highlighted the proximity of the 2024 Presidential Election and described the DOJ’s lack of action as "especially alarming."
They emphasized that noncitizen participation in elections threatens the integrity of democratic processes and could undermine public trust in election results. "Clearly, there is a non-negligible amount of voter participation by non-citizens in federal elections," they continued.
