Gov. Evers has introduced his fourth biennial budget, emphasizing investments in agriculture. These include strategic funding for conservation, market development, and support for farmers. Secretary Randy Romanski of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) expressed optimism about bipartisan support for these initiatives.
A significant feature of the budget is the proposed doubling of investment in the Wisconsin Initiative for Agricultural Exports (WIAE). Originally proposed by Gov. Evers in his 2021-23 budget, this program aims to boost food and agriculture exports from Wisconsin. "While things continue to evolve and remain uncertain at the federal level with tariffs and trade negotiations, it is more important than ever to continue our momentum with Wisconsin agricultural exports," Romanski stated.
In 2024, DATCP facilitated numerous trade missions, contributing to a record $3.97 billion in food, forestry, and agriculture exports for Wisconsin. The state leads in exporting specialty cheeses, ginseng roots, prepared cranberries, mink products, dairy bovine genetics, and prepared meats.
The Governor's proposal seeks to enhance this export success by providing opportunities for agribusinesses to expand their reach globally. According to Romanski: "Wisconsin agribusinesses utilize these services to support their relationship building, navigating foreign markets."
With Wisconsin recently moving up to 12th place nationally in food-related exports, there is a strong incentive for continued investment through the 2025-27 budget cycle. As Romanski noted: "It is clear that agriculture is part of our past, present, and future."
Ag Trade Day will be celebrated on March 19 as part of National Ag Day festivities across the nation.
