The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is set to hold public meetings regarding the 2025 spongy moth treatment plan. Michael Falk, Supervisor at DATCP's Forest Pest Survey and Control Unit, highlighted the significance of these efforts: “Multi-year population outbreaks occur roughly every decade in areas where spongy moth has established. These outbreaks have occurred across eastern and central Wisconsin over the last couple years, and our 2025 treatment plan is designed to prevent populations from spreading into uninfested regions of western Wisconsin and causing damage to our timber, nursery, and tourism industries."
The planned treatments will take place from May through July using low-flying planes over approximately 69,065 acres at 27 sites in eight counties. The targeted areas have been identified due to increasing populations of the spongy moth, a non-native insect that threatens hundreds of tree and shrub species.
To inform the public about these plans, DATCP will host three open house meetings. These sessions will provide an opportunity for attendees to engage with staff, learn more about the spongy moth issue, and view maps detailing treatment areas. The meetings are scheduled as follows:
- Wednesday, March 19, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., at Platteville Public Library.
- Tuesday, March 25, from 5-7 p.m., at Frederic Village Hall.
- Wednesday, March 26, from 4-5:45 p.m., at Durand Community Library.
For additional information or updates on the treatment plan, members of the public can visit relevant websites or contact DATCP via email at spongymoth@wisconsin.gov.
