Derrick Van Orden, a representative from Wisconsin, announced he is temporarily stepping away from his duties following a serious threat against his family. He called for bipartisan condemnation of political violence in a statement made on X.
"Rep. Van Orden will be missing votes tomorrow and rescheduling his upcoming town hall due to a credible threat made against his wife, children, and grandchildren," said Van Orden, U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. "No elected official, regardless of political party affiliation, should have to worry about the safety of their family while serving the American people. Threats of political violence are not just dangerous — they are anti-American. It is a poison on our nation and every Member of Congress — Republican or Democrat — should fully condemn it when they see it."
In May 2025, U.S. Representative Derrick Van Orden disclosed a credible threat against his family, confirmed by local law enforcement in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. According to Wisconsin Public Radio, Van Orden attributed the threat to heightened political rhetoric and urged for bipartisan condemnation of violence targeting elected officials. This incident underscores growing concerns over the personal safety of lawmakers and their families amid escalating political tensions.
The U.S. Capitol Police reported investigating 9,474 threats against members of Congress in 2024, indicating a sharp increase from previous years. The number of threat cases has nearly tripled since 2017, prompting heightened concern for lawmaker security and calls for increased protective resources. These trends reflect the rising hostility faced by elected officials.
A 2024 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies found a significant rise in political violence in the U.S., particularly from domestic extremist groups. The report noted that attacks and threats against public officials have become more frequent, leading to recommendations for enhanced funding for law enforcement and protective measures to counter these growing risks.
Van Orden, a Republican representing Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District, has served in the U.S. House since January 2023. According to his official biography, he serves on the House Committees on Agriculture, Armed Services, and Veterans’ Affairs and prioritizes national security, support for veterans, and strengthening rural economies.
