Tom Tiffany, representative of Wisconsin, said a Dane County court endangered public safety by releasing a violent undocumented immigrant on low bail and urged cutting federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions. The statement was made on X.

"Liberal Dane County let loose another criminal," said Tiffany, U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. "Allowing a felony-charged illegal alien who nearly killed someone back onto our streets. This decision puts every Wisconsinite in danger. Dane's federal funding should be STRIPPED for being a sanctuary jurisdiction."

In April 2025, The Daily Cardinal reported an increase in legal assistance requests from undocumented immigrants in Dane County, Wisconsin. This surge followed the introduction of new state and federal immigration laws. Local advocacy groups have expanded their efforts to support noncitizen clients facing complex legal challenges. This reflects broader community concerns over heightened enforcement and the impact of changing policies on vulnerable populations.

According to Wisconsin Watch, state prosecutors filed approximately 250,000 bail jumping charges over the past five years. This data indicates a rigorous legal stance on violations of bail conditions in Wisconsin courts, particularly in cases involving serious offenses. These figures have sparked ongoing debate over bail reform and due process.

Wisconsin Right Now reported that in 2025, the Dane County Sheriff's Office declined 90% of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer requests, continuing its policy of limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Sheriff Kalvin Barrett’s approach aligns with sanctuary principles aimed at maintaining trust with immigrant communities. This stance has drawn criticism from immigration hardliners who argue it compromises public safety.

Tiffany serves as a Republican representative for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District and is a member of both the House Judiciary Committee and the Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement. According to his official congressional biography, he champions strict immigration enforcement and regularly criticizes sanctuary jurisdictions. His committee assignments provide him direct influence over national immigration legislation.
