"House Republicans just voted to deport illegal aliens convicted of drunk driving," said Rep. Tom Tiffany. "Steven Nasholm was a loving Wisconsin father before a repeat drunk-driving illegal took his life. It's appalling that 160 Democrats voted against deporting these criminals."
The U.S. House passed the Protect Our Communities from DUIs Act (H.R. 875) in June 2025. This legislation mandates the deportation of non-citizens convicted of drunk driving and was approved with a 246–160 vote, which included support from 37 Democrats. According to the Times of India, this signals a strong bipartisan move to tie DUI offenses directly to immigration enforcement.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, there were 2,844 DUI-related criminal convictions among non-citizens in fiscal year 2024, up from 2,493 in 2023. This data highlights a rising trend and provides statistical justification for recent House action on immigration and deportation measures.
House roll-call data show that the DUI deportation bill passed mainly along party lines but with more Democratic support than other recent enforcement bills, such as the Laken Riley Act. This reflects shifting political dynamics in the debate over immigration-related criminal penalties.
